Abedul no solo sugería; ella prometía.

Sam estaba sentado, sudando, dudando.

Investing in Halloween

Monday, October 27 The air inside Samuel Gómez's car was as heavy as the silence he'd just left. The scent of his wife's cheap perfume had mingled with the stench of bitter failure, a poison he couldn't get out of his lungs despite the open window. He'd had another fight. His marriage was torn apart by old betrayals and debt, creating a chasm between him and Juana. Sam, a forty-something economist working for the firm Thornton & James Money, felt like a wasted man, spiraling downward.

As soon as he entered the office, the tension was visible on Ted Howard's face. His boss, an important man in the company who seemed to have a look of contempt tattooed on his face, was waiting for him at the entrance.

"Gomez," Ted blurted out immediately, his voice sharp. "Your last decisions have been a disaster. We're losing a lot of money. If you make another mistake, I swear not even your marriage will save you from being fired."

Samuel felt anxiety and anger tighten his throat. He nodded, noticing the cold sweat on his neck. To make matters worse, Ted told him, annoyed, that he had to take care of the new intern. One more nuisance in his already hellish life. Sam silently cursed his bad luck, his boss, the money gods, and the life that had betrayed him.

But when he got to cubicle 4B, the world seemed to shake, and a ray of darkness crept into his life. Sitting in the chair, reviewing a computer manual with a concentration that seemed otherworldly, was her.

It was an image that took his breath away. An explosive brunette in her twenties, with wild red hair falling over her bare, strong shoulders. Her eyes, a mysterious color somewhere between amber and jade, were deep and magnetic, like portals to forbidden pleasure. She wore a white blouse that barely contained her breasts and a tight skirt that was almost sinful.

"Good morning, Mr. Gomez," she said in a soft, almost purring voice as she slowly stood up. "I'm Birch, your new intern and assistant."

The name, as foreign as her beauty, echoed in Sam's mind like the beat of an ancient drum. The cynicism was gone. The anger faded. A burning, guilty excitement flooded him. "At least," he thought with a lust that burned his blood, "it won't be so terrible going to the slaughterhouse if I have a woman like that by my side." Quickly, however, he forced himself to focus. Success was his only salvation at the moment.

The rest of the day was a pleasant torment. Sam researched stocks and crunched numbers, while teaching Birch how to use the stock market software. Her proximity, the faint scent of sandalwood and musk she emanated, and the way she leaned forward, revealing a cleavage that disturbed him, made his concentration seem like a lie. His arousal grew with each explanation, and the worst part—or the best part—was that Birch seemed to respond to his subtle glances with full-lipped smiles and long stares. She was the mirror of his worst desires.

Tuesday, October 28 On Tuesday, the Halloween party for Friday was announced. Ted Howard, with a sneer that hurt, warned him: "Only for those who still have jobs, Gomez." Sam's stomach churned. He told the HR manager he wouldn't be going; his marriage was already a minefield, and a drunken night at the office was the last thing he needed.

In his cubicle, Birch was waiting for him, more sensual than ever, a clear temptation. She was wearing a short, tight dress in an emerald green so intense it seemed to have a life of its own. Her legs, young and perfect, stood out like marble columns. Samuel fought to hide an erection that threatened to burst his suit. He tried to focus on the action, but the way Birch moved, the light touch of her arm as she gave him a report, was torture.

The sexual tension was thick, like an energy field surrounding them. Their eyes met on the monitor for a moment, but in that brief moment, Sam felt like she was stripping him bare with her gaze, that she knew his darkest thoughts and approved of them. Birch wasn't just suggesting; she was promising. The way she laughed at a forced joke, her hand that lingered a second too long in his—it was the most dangerous game Samuel had ever played, and he was already losing.

The afternoon centered on an important decision: invest in the safe company Anime Imagine 4X or bet on the new, if strange, Devil October Games. The latter seemed to be growing rapidly in the gaming world, but its image was downright chilling. The photo on its website was shocking: a giant, fat man with a hideous pig's head, accompanied by two blonde demons of cold and cruel beauty. The name, Devil October Games, was written in letters that seemed to drip blood.

Sam sat, sweating, hesitating. Birch, standing behind him, leaned down. Her right hand slid to his neck and gently stroked it, right where he felt his pulse. Her sweet, intoxicating breath reached his ear. With his other hand, Birch pointed to the demonic company's logo.

"This is the winner, Sam," she whispered, her full lips brushing his ear. "The only one who will save you. Follow the beast."

Sam almost moaned with pleasure. His doubt vanished under the pressure of excitement and the promise in her voice. Logic vanished. He followed Birch's advice without a second thought, with the blind faith of an addict. He invested all his remaining money in Devil October Games.

Wednesday, October 29 On Wednesday, Samuel shaved carefully and put on his finest suit. His mind was dominated by Birch. Office desire, he thought, was a game he was ready to play, no matter the price.

Birch, dressed in a gray suit, tight and formal, but still showcasing her curves, was surrounded. Several men from the office, like vultures in ties, said nice things to her over coffee. Jealousy, an ugly and base feeling, ignited in Sam's chest.

Birch saw him. With a self-satisfied smile that made the hairs on his neck stand up, she left the group. She walked toward him with a slow, almost hypnotic movement and greeted him with a long, wet kiss on the cheek, her breath hot. Sam felt like a foolish teenager. They entered the cubicle, where the jokes and stares escalated, turning the space into a bubble of pent-up desire.

Six o'clock in the evening passed. The office was emptying, but Sam remained glued to the screen. Excitement had turned into icy fear: Devil October Games' stock wasn't rising. In fact, they had dropped by two percent. He looked at the screen. The pig-headed man seemed to be watching him, his large snout and small, bloodshot eyes mocking. Amid the stress and exhaustion, Sam thought he saw the two blonde design devils moving, their porcelain bodies slowly rotating.

Then Birch came back to say goodbye. He saw Sam's face, pale and glued to the screen. He didn't even look at her.

With surprising strength, she turned her chair to face him. She leaned close to his face, the distance disappearing. With a boldness that paralyzed him, she licked the corner of his lips.

"It'll be okay," she whispered, her voice now a low, dangerous purr.

Sam tried to react, a burst of desire that he tried to turn into a kiss, but she stopped it with her left hand, pressing against his chest. Her right hand, with long, crimson-painted nails, slid under the desk. The sensation of her fingers playing with Sam's intimate area was an electric shock. She continued kissing him, biting his lower lip until it bled a little.

Sam was on the verge of collapse, his eyes closed, listening to the amplified echo of her sensual voice: "Everything will be damned fineeee."

When he opened his eyes, Birch was gone. The trail of saliva, the scent of sandalwood, and the small ache on his lip were the only proof that he had been there.

That night at home, sleep was a feast of madness. On one hand, Birch, naked and dominant, riding his dreams with a witch's laugh. On the other, the pig-headed man, his gaze fixed, chasing him through corridors of rotten meat. He woke up in the middle of the night, sweat soaking the sheets, his groin throbbing with terrifying excitement, and a thirst burning his throat.
